In 2018, at the age of 48, my life changed forever. I was diagnosed with a massive Brain Tumor. Worse, it was diffuse and covered more than 60% of my brain, crossing the midsection and affecting both hemispheres. All I knew and read was that there was no"good" brain tumor and my life expectancy was in the range of 1-3 years.  This was backed up by the shocked look on the faces of the doctors that I took my initial MRIs to. To confirm what type of tumor it was, I was brought in to do a biopsy. As it was such a dangerous operation, and this was a Catholic hospital, a priest was brought in to give me the last rites. Needless to say, this did not boost my confidence. However, we prayed together and I asked the Lord to give me 10 more years to get my 3 kids to College. I went into the operating room thinking I may not come out. Waking up in the operating theatre post-op I waited on tender-hooks for the diagnosis which only came 3 days later. I spent those 3 days in constant prayer. When the result finally came, I was surprised to hear that it was early stage Oligodendroglioma, a type of brain tumor I hadn't heard about. After quickly looking it up on the net, I was pleasantly surprised and insanely grateful to discover it was a low grade, slow-moving tumor, and the life expectancy associated with it was 10+ years. It also carried a genetic marker which specific chemotherapy treatments had targeted successfully to cure it. I was literally up in my hospital bed thanking the Lord for this miracle.

Then I went to work. I was determined to find a way of extending my life expectancy even further and clearing my brain of this tumor for good. I was scheduled for the standard radiation and chemotherapy and, while in the hospital for 6 weeks, researched brain tumor cures and quickly came across an article by Dr. Valter Longo on Cancer and Fasting. This was not only an answer to my prayers but was an epiphany. It changed my life forever. He had done experiments measuring the efficacy of chemotherapy on mice injected with the most virulent form of brain tumor, Glioblastoma, which usually kills within months of diagnosis. One mouse was fed a diet of carbohydrates and one mouse was fasted before, during and after chemotherapy. The fed mouse quickly died while the fasted mouse lived an average of 30% longer than the mouse who ate its standard diet. That was the answer to my prayers. If I could learn to fast and practice it during my chemotherapy, I had the chance of a life expectancy of 12-13 years. This was confirmed by a doctor at UCSF, who confidently confirmed that I would probably die of some other illness first!

I promptly contacted Dr. Longo and he told me that, as I was taking chemotherapy by pill daily for 1 week at a time, instead of by one day of injection, I would have to fast for one day before and one day after my 5-day cycles eg. 7 days!

 

Luckily, I had learned to fast years earlier after having watched a BBC documentary on Fasting by Michael Mosley. Due to my lifestyle of constant business travel, I chose to follow his 5:2 diet, fasting 2 days per week and eating normally for 5. I lost 10kgs (22lbs) within weeks and went from 118kgs (260lbs) to 108kgs (237lbs) in 4 weeks. By sticking to this protocol and doing longer fasts, I managed to lose a further 20kgs (44lbs) over just a few months. however, I had never tried a 7 day fast before (water, tea and coffee only).

Again, I prayed for the Lord to give me strength. It was very hard but I persevered and 4 years later, after an in-depth MRI, my doctor gave me the amazing news that I no longer had any trace of the tumor in my brain. In addition, I had cured my other illnesses, Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Kidney Disease, Prediabetes and even a bone spur in my big toe caused by Gout. My mission in Life now is to share my story and help others reverse their illnesses with the help of Faith and Fasting.
